What general dentistry means, in plain language
General dentistry is the everyday side of dental care: the checking, cleaning and small repairs that keep a mouth healthy.
Check-ups and oral exams. Your dentist looks over your teeth, gums, existing fillings or crowns, the way your teeth meet when you bite, and the soft tissues of your mouth. The point is to notice change while it is still small.
Professional cleaning, also called prophylaxis. Plaque that is not brushed away hardens into tartar, which cannot be removed at home. A cleaning takes that buildup off the tooth surfaces and the gumline, then polishes the teeth.
Digital x-rays and diagnostic imaging. Some things are not visible from the outside: decay starting between two teeth, a problem under an old filling, the bone level around the roots, or a tooth that has not come through. Digital x-rays give a clear picture with modern imaging, and they are taken where your dentist judges they are needed rather than automatically.
Tooth-coloured fillings. When decay has broken through the enamel, the damaged part is removed and the space rebuilt with a material shaded to your tooth, restoring it without visible metal.
Fluoride treatment. A concentrated fluoride is applied to the tooth surfaces to help strengthen enamel. It suits some patients rather than all, and your dentist will say whether it applies.
Regular dental examinations can help identify concerns such as decay, gum irritation and bite issues earlier, allowing your dentist to recommend appropriate treatment.
Is a Check-up Due?
Who it may help. Everyone. Routine examinations and cleaning are the foundation of oral health for adults and children alike, whether or not anything feels wrong. That last part matters, because early decay and early gum problems often cause no symptoms. Discomfort tends to arrive late, once a problem is already bigger.
Things to consider. If it has been more than a year since your last visit, or you notice bleeding gums, sensitivity or persistent bad breath, it is worth booking sooner. Your dentist will advise the right interval for you.
When a check-up is not the whole answer. General dentistry is built for prevention and small repairs. If you have a badly broken tooth, a long-standing infection, missing teeth or a bite you want changed, an examination is still the right starting point, but the treatment belongs to another part of our practice.
What a Visit Looks Like
- Examination of teeth, gums and existing dental work
- Digital x-rays where indicated
- Professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar
- Findings explained, with a treatment plan if anything needs attention
- Fluoride treatment where recommended
Your dentist explains what was found before anything is decided.
How long it takes, and what happens afterwards
An examination and cleaning is normally handled within one appointment. A check-up is preventive care, so teeth that already need treatment will need separate visits for that work.
After a cleaning, gums can feel tender for a short while and teeth can feel more sensitive to hot and cold, particularly if there was a lot of buildup. That usually settles, and brushing gently while keeping to your normal routine is generally enough.
After a filling, local anaesthetic can leave your lip, tongue or cheek numb for a while, so take care not to bite the numbed area and be careful with hot drinks until feeling returns. After a fluoride application, follow the instruction you are given about waiting before you eat or drink.
How long the results last
A cleaning is not a one-off fix. Plaque begins to build again from the day you leave, which is why the interval between visits matters more than any single appointment. Your dentist will recommend the right interval based on your oral health.
Fillings are long-lasting but not lifelong. They are checked at every examination for wear, chipping or new decay at the edges, and one that has reached the end of its service is replaced. How long yours lasts depends on its size, where it sits, your bite and your home care.
How general dentistry compares with our other treatments
Some treatments require an examination, x-rays, scans or treatment planning first.
- If decay has reached the nerve inside a tooth, a filling is no longer enough and the tooth is assessed for root canal treatment.
- If a tooth cannot be saved, or a wisdom tooth is causing trouble, that is assessed under oral surgery.
- If a tooth is too broken for a filling, or teeth are missing, crowns, bridges and dentures and dental implants are the restorative options.
- If your concern is mainly appearance, cosmetic dentistry and veneers address the shape, shade and alignment of the visible teeth.
- If teeth are crowded or the bite is off, orthodontics covers braces and clear aligners.
- Where many teeth need rebuilding at once, that is full mouth reconstruction, planned as one case rather than separate repairs.
How to prepare for your appointment
- Note any symptoms, how long they have been there and what makes them worse.
- Bring a list of the medicines you take, and any medical conditions or allergies your dentist should know about.
- Bring recent dental records or x-rays from another clinic if you have them.
- Write your questions down first. Cost, timing and alternatives are all fair questions.
- Book in advance to secure your preferred time.
